Antigua and Barbuda is an island nation located in the eastern part of the Caribbean Sea, consisting of the islands of Antigua, Barbuda and the small uninhabited island of Redonda. The country is known for its white sandy beaches, crystal clear waters and tropical climate, making it a popular tourist vacation destination.
Betty's Hope is not a city, but an important historical site on the island of Antigua. Built in the mid-17th century as one of the earliest and largest sugar plantations on the island, Betty's Hope is now open to the public as an open-air museum, with two restored windmill towers and some of the remains of the buildings.
Betty's Hope bears witness to the history of colonial sugarcane cultivation and slavery, showcasing traditional sugarcane crushing techniques and windmill power systems. Visitors can learn about Antigua's agricultural history through the exhibition, and the windmill tower has become one of the island's iconic landmarks.
The site is located in the Pauls Valley, in the central part of Antigua, about 20 minutes from the capital, St. John's. It is open Tuesday through Saturday for visitors interested in history, culture and colonial architecture.
