Mahaicony, Guyana: a farming community on the banks of the river and a cultural crossroads
Mahaicony is a coastal community in the East Berbice-Coburnstown District of Guyana, located about 70 kilometers east of the capital city of Georgetown on the banks of the Mahaicony River. Known for its vast rice fields and sugar cane plantations, it is an important agricultural area in Guyana, and the local population is mostly engaged in rice farming, fishing and small-scale animal husbandry. Built along the river, the community retains a traditional Guyanese village life style, mixing elements of Indian, African and Aboriginal cultures to create a unique folklore. Although not a large city, Maikoni, with its tranquil natural environment and simple community atmosphere, is a window to the rural culture of Guyana's interior and an important node for exploring the country's agro-ecology.
