Mayotte: tropical island in the French Overseas Departments

Mayotte is a French overseas department, not an independent country, located in the Mozambique Channel in the Indian Ocean. The region consists of the main island, Grande Terre, Petite Terre, and the surrounding smaller islands, with Mamouchou as its capital. One of the poorest French administrative regions, Mayotte has a unique natural and cultural charm.

Geographical and ecological characteristics

Mayotte is famous for its lagoon, one of the largest coral lagoons in the world, where the crystal clear waters harbor sea turtles, whales and other marine life. The island is covered with tropical vegetation, and the volcanic landscape has created rolling hills. Despite its small area of 374 square kilometers, the dense mangrove and coral ecosystem is classified as a marine nature reserve.

Multiculturalism and Social Status

The population is predominantly of Comorian origin and the official language is French, although Mayotte (a dialect of Swahili) is widely spoken. The economy is dependent on French subsidies, and agricultural products such as vanilla and ylang ylang are traditional industries. In recent years, the local community has faced challenges such as inadequate infrastructure due to migratory pressures and social tensions.

Tourism and Transportation

Mamouchou, the capital city, has an Arab-style market, a 19th-century mosque and colonial buildings that reflect the fusion of cultures. There are no railroads on the island, and the road network is concentrated along the coast, with connections to neighboring regions such as Réunion through Zaouzi airport. Diving and eco-tourism are becoming a priority.
