The French Southern Hemisphere and Antarctic Territory (TAAF) is a French overseas territory located in the southern Indian Ocean and Antarctica, with Port-de-France as its administrative center. The territory consists of five decentralized administrative regions: the Kerguelen Islands, the Crozet Archipelago, Amsterdam Island, St. Paul's Island, and Adélie Land (the area of France's claim to Antarctica). Port-de-France, located specifically on the Kerguelen Islands, is the main administrative and scientific base of the territory, with a port, a weather station and a research center.
Port-de-France has a cold and windy climate, with vegetation dominated by mosses and lichens, and is surrounded by an abundance of marine life, including penguins, seals and many species of seabirds. Due to its remote location and harsh environment, there are no permanent residents and only a rotating staff of researchers, technical teams and military personnel are stationed there. The site is of great scientific value for oceanography, climate research and ecological monitoring, while France exercises sovereignty over it and is responsible for environmental protection and fisheries management.
As an area under the Antarctic Treaty System, Port-de-France is not open to tourism and its main function is to support French and international scientific research. Its unique geographical and scientific position makes it one of the key nodes for global Antarctic and sub-Antarctic research.
