About Les Trois-Îlets, Martinique
Les Trois-Îlets is a seaside municipality in the southwestern part of the island of Martinique in the French Overseas Region, located on the southern shore of the Bay of Fort-de-France. It has an area of 28.6 square kilometers and a population of about 6,000, and is known for its well-preserved colonial architecture and Creole culture.
History and Cultural Tourism
The city of Three Rivers, named after the three rivers that historically flowed into the sea, is the birthplace of Napoleon's Empress Josephine, whose former home is now a museum. The converted cultural space of an old sugar mill, the Church of St. Anne and the traditional craft market show the intersection of Caribbean and French cultures, and attracts a large number of tourists each year to participate in music festivals and traditional boat races.
Natural and Economic Features
The city has diamond rock beaches, golf courses and mangrove ecosystems. The economy is based on tourism, supplemented by agriculture (bananas, sugar cane) and fishing. Connected by ferry to the capital Fort-de-France, it is an important vacation destination in Martinique.
