Tursunzadeh is a city in western Tajikistan, about 60 kilometers west of the capital city of Dushanbe, and is part of the Republican Direct Zone. Named after the Soviet-era Tajik politician Tursunzadeh, the city has historically been an important industrial center, especially during the Soviet period when it was known for its aluminum industry, and had the largest aluminum plant in Central Asia, the Tajik Aluminum Plant.
Located on the edge of the Gorno-Badakhshan mountain range, the city has a dry climate and a predominantly industrial economy that also relies on agriculture and cross-border trade. The population is predominantly Tajik, and culturally it retains traditional customs, but industrial development has brought some diversification. As a transportation hub linking Tajikistan and Uzbekistan, Tursunzadeh plays an important role in the regional economy and in recent years has been gradually diversifying its industries to promote sustainable development.
