Akutan, Alaska: Remote Island Community in the Aleutian Chain
Akutan is a small, remote city located in Aleutians East Borough, Alaska, situated on Akutan Island in the Aleutian Islands archipelago. With a population of around 300 residents, it is one of the smallest incorporated cities in the United States, accessible primarily by air or sea. The community is known for its vibrant commercial fishing industry, particularly for Pacific cod and other seafood, supported by a processing facility that exports globally. Dominated by the active Akutan Volcano (elevation 3,038 feet), the island features rugged, volcanic terrain and abundant wildlife, including sea lions, seals, and seabirds.
