Las Anod: A Disputed City in Northeast Somaliland
Las Anod is located in the northeast of Somaliland in the Horn of Africa, near the border with Puntland, Somalia, and is a long-standing area of dispute between Somaliland and the Federal Government of Somalia. Strategically located, the city is a traditional settlement of the local Somali Isaaq clan and an important trade hub connecting landlocked Somalia with neighboring Ethiopia. The economy is based on animal husbandry, with an active trade in livestock such as camels and goats. In recent years, the security situation in Las Anod has fluctuated from time to time due to the issue of regional belonging, but its position as a transportation and commercial node can still not be ignored. It has a population of about 100,000, most of whom speak Somali, and Islam is the main religion.
