Fort Madison is located in the southeastern part of the U.S. state of Iowa and is the county seat of Lee County. Located on the west bank of the Mississippi River and across the river from Illinois, the city is known for its rich history and unique location.
Founded in 1808, Fort Max was one of the first U.S. military strongholds established in the Upper Mississippi River region, and takes its name from James Madison, the fourth president of the United States. It was an important site for the Lewis and Clark Expedition of 1804, and the site of the restored historic fort remains, making it an important cultural tourism resource.
A regional transportation hub, Fort Max boasts a rare double-track swing bridge over the Mississippi River that connects the Iowa-Illinois rail system. Major industries include manufacturing, agriculture and logistics, and well-known companies such as Deere & Company have large factories here. Traditional events such as the annual Triangle Festival attract many visitors.
The city is surrounded by a rich natural landscape, including riverside parks and hiking trails. The educational system is well developed, with a complete chain of education from elementary school to the community. The mild four-season climate and low cost of living make it representative of a livable small Midwestern city.
