Mbabana is the capital and largest city of Swaziland (Eswatini), a landlocked country in southeastern Africa, situated at the foot of the Mdimba Mountains, at an altitude of about 1,243 meters above sea level, with a mild and pleasant climate. As the political, economic and cultural center of the country, the city has a concentration of government agencies, foreign embassies, and major financial institutions.
Founded in 1902, Mbabane developed as an administrative hub during the British colonial period and officially became the capital of Swaziland after independence in 1968. The city's population of approximately 90,000 (2020 estimate) is predominantly Swazi, with languages including Swati and English, and residents mostly practicing Christianity or traditional religions.
The economy is dominated by the service sector, encompassing government administration, trade and tourism, as well as light industries such as sugar processing and textiles. The city is compactly planned, with amenities such as shopping centers, hospitals and Mbabana Market, but infrastructure still needs to be improved. Surrounding attractions include the Mlanga Mountains and traditional cultural villages.
Mbabana is known for its annual Reed Dance Festival, a traditional event that attracts tens of thousands of participants and showcases Swaziland's unique royal culture and national cohesion. The city has limited modernization, but with its safe and friendly atmosphere is an important gateway for exploring Swaziland's natural and human heritage.
