Kurta is situated in the Terai plains with a hot and humid climate and retains a strong Madhesi cultural tradition. Most of the local residents are Hindus, with several historic Hindu temples, and the annual festivals such as the Desai Festival attract a large number of tourists. It is also an important border trade hub to the Indian state of West Bengal.
Kurta is easily accessible via the Mahendra Highway and is surrounded by natural attractions such as the Kohitapu Wildlife Sanctuary. Visitors can experience countryside cycling, bird watching activities and savor the local specialty of Dalmatian handloaf. Kurta is emerging as an important gateway for exploring the human and eco-tourism of eastern Nepal.
