Marianao, Cuba: Colonial Jewel and Cultural Hub of the West
Marianao (Mariel) is an important port city in the western Cuban province of Pinar del Río, about 40 kilometers west of the capital city of Havana, known for its natural deep-water harbor and deep historical and cultural heritage. Founded in the 18th century, the city was once an important trading hub during the Spanish colonial period, and the old town retains a large number of colonial-era buildings, such as the neoclassical Church of Santo Antonio de Badia, which is on UNESCO's Tentative List of World Heritage Sites. Marianao Bay is one of the busiest ports in the Caribbean and serves not only an international trade function, but also as an important window for Cuba's foreign exchanges. The surrounding area is predominantly agricultural, producing crops such as sugar cane and tobacco, while its proximity to the famous Viñales Valley eco-tourism area attracts many tourists to explore its unique natural and human landscapes.
