Sagua de Tánamo in Cuba is located in the south-eastern part of the country, in the province of Holguín, and is an important town in the Tanamo Valley region. Located about 70 kilometers from the provincial capital of Holguín, it is situated in the northern foothills of the Maestra mountain range and has a typical Caribbean tropical climate.
Sagua de Tanamo was founded during the colonial period in the 19th century and takes its name from the Sagua and Tanamo Rivers that flow through the town. Historically known for its sugar cane cultivation and sugar industry, the town still retains its colonial-style architecture. The local economy is based on agriculture, producing tropical crops such as coffee and citrus, and in recent years ecotourism has been developing.
The surrounding area is part of the Alexander von Humboldt National Park (World Natural Heritage), famous for its biodiversity. The town center retains the neoclassical Church of Our Lady of the Angels, and a traditional festival honoring the town's patron saint is held every September, demonstrating the unique blend of cultures that characterizes eastern Cuba.
