Al Abr, Yemen: Historic City on the Red Sea Coast
Al Abr is a historic city on the Red Sea coast of western Yemen, strategically located in the southwestern part of Taiz Governorate near the entrance to the Bab-el-Mandeb Strait. With a history of more than 2,000 years, the ancient city was an important node on the ancient spice trade routes, and still retains remnants of its Ottoman-era citadel, mosque, and traditional markets. The climate is hot and dry, the economy is based on fishing, agriculture (e.g., coffee and date cultivation) and handicrafts, and most of the inhabitants retain their traditional way of life. Despite the situation in Yemen, the ancient architecture and unique culture of Abr still attracts some history buffs to visit it, making it one of the windows to Yemen's traditional landscape.
