Al-Hawtah is the capital of Yemen's Lahj Governorate, located in the southwestern part of the country about 300 kilometers south of the capital, Sana'a. The city is situated on a fertile coastal plain and is surrounded by agricultural areas. The city is situated on a fertile coastal plain and is surrounded by a predominantly agricultural area that produces dates, grains and fruits, and is known as the "Green Land".
Hautai has a long history and was once an important node on ancient trade routes. The city retains traditional Yemeni architecture, such as mud-brick houses and old bazaars. The local population is predominantly Arab, generally practicing Islam and maintaining strong tribal cultural traditions and handicraft making practices.
Located in the tropics, Hauteaux has a hot and dry climate, but thanks to its groundwater resources, agriculture is relatively well-developed. In addition to agriculture, animal husbandry and small-scale trade are the main pillars of the economy. The city's infrastructure has faced challenges in recent years due to the civil war in Yemen, but it remains the political and commercial center of Lahj Governorate.
Hautai is connected by road to major cities such as the port of Aden and Taiz, but transportation conditions are rudimentary. With the current turmoil in Yemen, Hautai is facing a humanitarian crisis and tourism has largely stagnated. International organizations often use the area to provide assistance to the surrounding region.
