Étang-Salé is a seaside commune in the southwestern part of the island of Réunion in the French overseas department of Réunion, bordering the Indian Ocean to the west and about 50 kilometers from the capital, Saint-Denis. It is famous for its black sand beaches, formed by the weathering of volcanic lava, which are a unique natural feature of the island. Etang-Salé is divided into Les Bains and Les Hauts, and has a mild and dry climate, with an average annual temperature of about 24°C, making it suitable for water activities such as swimming and surfing.
Etang-Salé has one of the longest black sand beaches in Réunion, backed by a dense forest and with a view of the island's volcanic landscape. There is a well-developed beachfront trail, beach volleyball courts and a water sports center. The nearby Forêt d'Étang-Salé has hiking and mountain biking trails and is home to Reunion's endemic birds and vegetation. The beach culture festival, held every summer, attracts a large number of visitors.
The Creole town of Réunion, Etang-Salé retains its traditional wooden houses and spice plantations. The local cuisine is a mix of African, Indian and French flavors, and specialties such as cari and vanilla rum are highly prized. The town's infrastructure is excellent, with schools, a medical center and a golf course, making it a peaceful seaside town for both vacationers and residents.
