At an altitude of about 500 meters, the town is known for its traditional Creole architecture, its terraced coffee plantations and its cool highland climate.
Onteld has a large number of traditional Creole homes with colorful wood-reinforced walls and is known as one of the "most beautiful Creole villages". It is surrounded by herb plantations and forest trails with views of the Indian Ocean. The local economy is based on agriculture and eco-tourism, with coffee, geraniums and other crops, and the annual Flower Festival attracts many visitors to experience the cultural diversity of Reunion Island.
Onteld is about an hour's drive from the capital, St. Denis, passing the active volcano of Furness on the way. The town, with its traditional crafts market and starting point for hiking trails, is an ideal stopover for exploring the natural parks of southern Reunion Island. Its unique blend of French sophistication and tropical atmosphere makes it one of the most emblematic mountain towns on the island.
