Saint-Leu, Réunion is a famous seaside town on the west coast of the island of Réunion in the French Overseas Department, located in the southwestern part of the Indian Ocean. One of the island's historic towns, Saint-Leu is known for its spectacular black sand beaches, world-class surf breaks and rich marine ecology. It enjoys a warm tropical climate with an average annual temperature of around 24°C, making it a popular vacation destination for European tourists.
The coastline of Sainte-Leu is characterized by black sandy beaches formed by volcanoes, and the adjacent coral reef reserve is a popular spot for snorkeling and whale watching (June-October). Inland, the hilly terrain is dotted with vanilla plantations and sugar cane fields, reflecting Réunion's agricultural heritage. The nearby "Rivière Saint-Etienne" gorge is a paradise for hiking and canyoning.
Sainte-Leu has preserved its streetscape of traditional Creole architecture blended with French colonial style, with landmarks such as the Church of Sainte-Leu and the cultural center of Kyrenia. The International Kite Festival, held each summer, attracts enthusiasts from all over the world, while a turtle hatchery highlights the city's ecological conservation philosophy. Conveniently located about 30 kilometers from the capital city of Saint-Denis, the city is the western gateway for exploring the Reunion Volcanoes National Park.
