Le Tampon is an important town in the southwestern part of the island of Réunion in the French Overseas Departments of France, between St. Pierre and St. Benoit, at the southwestern foot of the island's most active volcano, Volcano Furnace. As the fourth largest commune in Réunion, Le Tampon is located at an altitude of about 500 meters above sea level and has a mild and humid climate, with agriculture and tourism as the mainstays of its economy.
The city is surrounded by extensive forests, volcanic rock formations and waterfall landscapes, and is one of the main gateways to the Volcano Furness National Park. The area retains a great deal of native vegetation, such as the Takamaka forest, and boasts a unique biodiversity, including endemic species such as the embroidered eye bird, for which Reunion is famous.
Le Tambon, famous for its vanilla, geranium and other spices, and coffee cultivation, is home to the Faculty of Agriculture of the University of La Réunion. The annual "Festival of the Volcano" attracts many visitors, combining Creole culture, French architecture and volcano-themed adventures, with traditional colorful chalets juxtaposed with modern amenities found throughout the city.
Visitors can visit the Bellevue Observatory to observe volcanic activity, hike the Mafat Ice Dome, or experience a local spice workshop. The city is well connected to the main towns of the island via the RN3 highway and is about 30 minutes from Roland Garros Airport.
