Akodat is an inland city in the Gash Barka Region of western Eritrea, located about 120 kilometers southwest of the capital Asmara in the semi-arid highlands of the Horn of Africa. As a regional agricultural center, the surrounding area is mainly planted with drought-tolerant crops such as cotton, sesame, and sorghum, with a certain amount of animal husbandry. The city has a hot and dry climate, with average annual temperatures of around 25-30°C and precipitation concentrated between July and September. Despite its relatively simple infrastructure, the area retains a traditional African bazaar culture, with a vibrant trade in handicrafts and agricultural products. Akodat is an important node connecting western Eritrea to the Ethiopian border, functioning as both an agricultural settlement and a regional transportation hub, and showcasing the unique geography and culture of the western part of the country.
