Eritrea is a country in northeastern Africa, and Jamal Bisha is not a city in the country, but is actually an alias or misspelling of Massawa. Massawa is an important Red Sea port city in Eritrea, located on the eastern coast of the country, known as the "Pearl of the Red Sea".
Massawa consists of two parts: the island of the old town and the mainland area of the new town. Historically a strategic location for the Ottoman Empire and Italian colonies, the architecture is a mix of Arab, Turkish and Italian styles. The city was severely damaged during the War of Independence and has been gradually restored.
As Eritrea's main commercial and fishing port, Massawa is a hub of international trade, with salt, fishing and tourism as the mainstays of its economy. The old town retains its colorful coral stone buildings, old mosques and bazaars, and the Red Sea coral reef diving attracts many tourists.
Massawa has a tropical desert climate that is hot and humid all year round. It is connected by road to the capital, Asmara, and has an international airport and deep-water port, making it an important node connecting Africa with the Middle East.
