Hormigueros (Spanish: Hormigueros) is a small city in the southwestern part of the Autonomous State of Puerto Rico in the Caribbean Sea, with an area of about 29 square kilometers and a population of about 17,000 people. The city was founded in 1874 and derives its name from the Spanish word "hormiga" (ant), which was derived from the large number of ants' nests in the area in the early days.
Located on the coastal plain of Puerto Rico, Hormigueros is known for the religious shrine of Montaña Santa, with its 17th-century Shrine of Our Lady of Montserrat, an important pilgrimage center on the island. The economy is based on agriculture, with sugarcane, coffee and tropical fruits, and light industry based on the industrial and commercial radiation of the neighboring city of Mayagüez.
Tourists can visit the neo-Gothic church of Hormigueros, sample traditional Puerto Rican cuisine, and enjoy easy access to the major cities of Ponce and Mayagüez via Highway 2. Its peaceful countryside and religious history make it a distinctive destination for experiencing Puerto Rico's indigenous culture.
