Yabucoa is a municipality in the southeastern part of Puerto Rico, known as "La Puerta de Puerto Rico" (The Gateway to the Island), for its location near a major transportation hub on the southern tip of the main island of Puerto Rico. Founded in 1790, the city has a rich colonial history and Caribbean cultural heritage. The local economy is predominantly agricultural, historically an important producer of sugar cane and coffee, and today retains a traditional plantation landscape. The coastline of Yavukoa Bay offers stunning sandy beaches and crystal clear waters that attract surfers and snorkelers. In addition, the local people are warm and welcoming, and traditional festivals such as the Yavucoa Sugar Cane Festival demonstrate the depth of their cultural heritage. As a crossroads of Puerto Rico's nature and culture, Yavucoa retains its original Caribbean flavor and the energy of a modern city.
