Lower Vega (Vega Baja) is a coastal municipality in the northern part of Puerto Rico, located about 40 kilometers west of the capital city of San Juan. Founded in 1776, the municipality has a total area of about 120 square kilometers and a population of about 60,000, which is typical of the size of towns in Puerto Rico.
Lower Vega is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the north, with natural attractions such as the famous Monte Beach, and a hilly terrain dominating the interior. The climate is tropical and maritime, warm and humid all year round, suitable for tropical crops, and historically known for sugar cane cultivation.
The economy is based on manufacturing, tourism and agriculture, with several industrial parks. Culturally, the city is a blend of Spanish traditions and Caribbean flavors, with annual carnivals and traditional music festivals. The old town retains colonial architecture, such as the 19th century Sacré-Coeur Church.
San Juan is connected via Highway 2, which is about an hour's drive. Visitors can visit Cipres Beach, participate in water sports, or explore the nearby Tortuguero Cave Park. Local specialties include seafood and mofongo desserts.
