Mount Katmai, located on the Alaska Peninsula in the U.S. state of Alaska, is one of the most active volcanoes in the state of Alaska, with an elevation of about 2,857 meters above sea level, belonging to the stratovolcano. The volcano is famous for its massive eruption in 1912, which created the world-famous "Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes", with ash from the eruption covering an area of more than 8,000 square kilometers. Makuhin volcano still has continuous geothermal activity, and its periodic eruptions have potential impacts on the surrounding ecosystem and aviation safety. Its surroundings are dominated by glaciers, tundra, and wildlife habitat, and its proximity to the Alaska Wilderness Preserve makes it an important area for geologic research, as well as a point of interest for explorers and nature enthusiasts.
