Ciego de Ávila is the capital of the province of Ciego de Ávila in central Cuba, located in the central plains of the island, bordered by Havana to the north and the province of Sancti Spiritus to the south. Founded in 1840, the city is historically known for its sugar and livestock industries, and retains some of its colonial architecture, such as the vintage-style houses around the Central Park (Parque Martí). The city is surrounded by a rich natural landscape, with the famous Playa de los Cayos in the north, which attracts tourists with its clear waters and coral reefs, making it one of the most popular destinations for eco-tourism in Cuba. The economy is based on agriculture (sugar cane, citrus) and services, and the city is easily accessible by public transportation, making it an important hub connecting the east and west of Cuba, with a historical and tropical flavor.
