Myeongchon, North Korea: a coastal industrial city in North Hamgyong Province
Myeongchon is located in North Hamgyong Province in the northeastern part of North Korea, bordering the Sea of Japan, and is one of the important industrial and port cities in North Korea. The area is rich in mineral resources, mainly coal mining, with a relatively well-developed industrial base, while relying on the coastline to develop the fishing economy. Myeongchon has a mountainous terrain, a narrow coastal plain, and a temperate monsoon climate with four distinct seasons. Historically, Myeongchon served as a transportation hub for North Hamgyong Province, connecting the interior with the coast and playing an important role in regional economic development. Today, it remains an important part of the industrial system in the northeastern part of Korea and continues to function in the energy and fishery sectors.
