Old Vegas Mormon Fort National Historical Park, located five miles north of downtown Las Vegas, Nevada, USA, is one of the earliest non-Native American settlements in Nevada. The site was founded in 1855 by Mormon missionaries as a way station on the trade route between Salt Lake City and Los Angeles. The park retains the outline of the original adobe fort and some of the reconstructed buildings, including the museum, visitor center, and historical markers.
As the birthplace of the Las Vegas Valley, Fort Mormon marks the historical beginning of the region's evolution from desert wasteland to modern city. After the fort's abandonment in 1865, the site was gradually added to the National Register of Historic Places and officially became a National Historical Park in 1991. Through archaeological artifacts, interactive exhibits, and guided programs, the park vividly presents the history of cultural exchange between 19th century western pioneers and Native Americans.
Visitors can tour the park free of charge to explore restored adobe fences, rye fields and century-old wells. The museum houses early settlers' implements, and seasonal demonstrations of pioneer skills are popular. The park is open daily from 8:30-16:30 (may be adjusted on holidays) and it is recommended to allow 1-2 hours to explore. The park is about a 15-minute drive from the Las Vegas Strip and offers free parking and handicapped facilities.
