Clayton is located in the northeastern part of the U.S. state of New Mexico, near the Texas-Oklahoma border, and is the county seat of Union County. The town is situated in the High Plains, at an elevation of about 1,905 meters above sea level, and has a dry climate with four distinct seasons, mild summers and cold, snowy winters. Founded in 1887, Clayton rose to prominence as a railroad transportation hub and was historically an important supply depot during the pioneering days of the West. Today, it is known for its dinosaur fossil sites and natural beauty, with nearby Clayton Lake State Park a popular spot for fishing and camping, and the town's Dinosaur Museum displaying remains of prehistoric creatures unearthed in the area. As the gateway to the southern plains, Clayton retains a strong western flavor, making it an ideal destination for experiencing New Mexico's rural culture.
