Introduction to Palm Jumeirah, UAE
The Palm Jumeirah is a man-made archipelago off the coast of Dubai, UAE, known as the "Eighth Wonder of the World". Launched in 2001, the project was created by reclaiming land to create a unique design in the shape of a palm tree, consisting of a trunk, 16 branches and a wrap-around breakwater.
Location and scale
The giant island extends 5.5 kilometers into the Persian Gulf and is 5 kilometers wide, with a total area equivalent to 800 soccer fields. It is connected to mainland Dubai by a 300-meter-long bridge and is the first of Dubai's three Palm Islands planned to be completed.
