San José is the capital of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, located in the northwestern part of the island, and is the political, economic and cultural center of the country. The city was founded in 1592 by Spanish colonists under the name of San José de Oroña, which was later shortened to its current name.
As one of the oldest cities in Trinidad and Tobago, St. Joseph retains a large number of colonial buildings such as the St. Joseph's Catholic Church and the Presidential Palace. The city has witnessed the historical changes from Spanish and British colonization to independence, and has developed a unique Creole heritage through the fusion of diverse African, Indian and European cultures.
St. Joseph is located in the tropics and enjoys a warm and humid climate, with an average annual temperature of approximately 26°C and two wet and dry seasons. Backed by the northern mountains and bordering the Caribbean Sea, the city is blessed with natural beauty and the nearby Malakas Bay is a famous beach resort area.
As the administrative center of the country, St. Joseph is home to a concentration of government agencies, financial firms and international organizations. Tourism is well-developed and visitors can visit the National Museum, Queen's Park Savannah, or experience festivals such as the annual Mardi Gras. The city is well connected to the world through the Piarco International Airport.
