Water Island was used as a U.S. Navy submarine base during World War II, with existing military remains such as bunkers and gun emplacements.The United States purchased the island from Denmark in 1940, and it gradually developed into a residential neighborhood after the war. Some of the buildings on the island were remodeled from old military barracks, preserving the historical features.

Tourist Characteristics

Water Island is known for its pristine beaches and snorkeling, and Turtle Bay for tropical fish and coral reefs. The island has a small museum displaying military artifacts and a handful of restaurants serving local cuisine.
