Located in the west-central part of the U.S. state of Illinois, Zenia is the largest city and county seat of Clay County. The city is strategically located about 200 miles south of Chicago and about 100 miles northeast of St. Louis.
Zenia was founded in 1825 and named after the ancient Greek city of Xenophon. According to the most recent census data, the city has approximately 23,000 residents. The city has a rich historical heritage, including several buildings listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Zenia's economy is dominated by manufacturing, healthcare, and retail. Major employers include the local Caterpillar Inc. plant and Clay County Hospital. The city has a well-developed K-12 education system and is close to higher education institutions such as Illinois State University.
