Aguas Corrientes was founded in the late 19th century, and its name means "hot water" in Spanish, which may be related to the hot springs in the area. Most of the inhabitants make their living from agriculture and animal husbandry, preserving the traditional Uruguayan countryside lifestyle and its simplicity. Every year, local festivals are held to show the characteristics of gaucho culture.
