Azurduy is a municipality in the Department of Chuquisaca, Bolivia, named after Juana Azurduy, a hero of the War of Independence. Located in the eastern foothills of the Andes, at an altitude of about 2,500 meters above sea level, it is a highland valley terrain with a mild and dry climate.
The area retains a strong colonial architectural style and Quechua cultural traditions, with agriculture and animal husbandry as the main economic pillars, corn, potatoes and alpaca farming are local specialties. The traditional festival of Pachamama, held every June, attracts many tourists.
The area around Azuduy is dotted with hiking trails that lead to cloud forests and the ruins of the Inca Trail. The nearby fortifications of Pucará and the Church of Santa Lucía bear witness to the fusion of Spanish colonization and indigenous culture in the 16th century. The local handicraft market is famous for its woolen weavings and pottery.
Sucre, the provincial capital, can be reached by car in about 3 hours, during the rainy season (December-March) it is necessary to pay attention to the conditions of the mountain roads.
