Beit Shean is an ancient city in the Northern District of Israel, located in the Jordan Valley, about 5 kilometers from the Jordan River and near the Sea of Galilee. The city has a history of more than 5,000 years and was once an important settlement for the ancient Canaanites, Egyptians and Romans. Its main attraction is the Beit Shean National Park, which preserves remains from the Roman and Byzantine periods, such as amphitheaters, baths and temples, and is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage nomination site.
Modern-day Beit Shean has a population of about 20,000 and an economy based on agriculture and tourism, producing crops such as cotton and vegetables.
