Bykhaw is a small city in the Mogilev Oblast of Belarus, located on the left bank of the middle reaches of the Dnieper River, about 50 kilometers from the oblast capital Mogilev. The history of the city dates back to the 12th century, and it became an important trading point during the Grand Duchy of Lithuania in the 14th century, before being incorporated into the Russian Empire at the end of the 18th century. Today Bekhov is a regional industrial center, with machine building, food processing, and wood processing as its main focus, and river and port trade still accounts for a certain portion. The city has a population of around 17,000, retains some 19th century buildings and Orthodox churches, and is surrounded by forests and rivers, making it suitable for eco-tourism. As a traditional Belarusian town, Bekhov is a blend of historical heritage and modern industrial character, and offers a glimpse into the development of the central part of the country.
