Gineagra is a town in the Cayo District of Belize, situated along the Belize River, about 30 kilometers from the capital city of Belmopan. Its name is derived from the Spanish word "Guanacaste", meaning "rain tree", reflecting the lush tropical vegetation of the area. As a historic settlement, Guineagras was an important area for the Mayan civilization, and archaeological sites such as Xunantunich are scattered around the area, attracting history buffs.
The town is known for its ecotourism, with the Belize River offering canoeing, bird watching and crocodile spotting activities, and the surrounding rainforest inhabited by wildlife such as howler monkeys and toucans. Gineagra is also the gateway to the Belize Zoo and cave system, where visitors can experience jungle trekking or visit traditional Creole villages. With a focus on sustainable development, the local community offers home-based lodges and native cuisine such as fish stew and fried plantains, showcasing Belize's multicultural fusion.
