Introduction to Old Curaal, Cape Verde
Cidade Velha (Old City), the former capital of the Republic of Cape Verde and a World Heritage Site, is located on the southern coast of the island of Santiago. As the first European colonial settlement in the tropics (founded in 1462), it was an important transit point for the Portuguese Empire's slave trade and bears witness to the history of the transatlantic trade.
Historical and Cultural Value
Old Cualar has some of the oldest roads, churches and forts in Cape Verde, including the Forte Real de São Filipe (Royal Fortress), built in 1587, which overlooks the city. The Rua Banana (Slate Street) is the oldest colonial street in sub-Saharan Africa, and the ruins of the São Filipe Church are home to the first Christian church in West Africa.
Tourism and Current Conditions
Today, Old Cualar attracts visitors with historic sites, colorful homes and traditional music performances, and the local specialty, Cachupa, is highly prized. A cultural icon of Cape Verde, it was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2009 and is an important destination for exploring Atlantic Creole culture.
