Lungar is an important city in the Ancash Region of Peru, located in the central-western part of the country, nestled on the western slopes of the Andes Mountains, at an altitude of about 3,150 meters above sea level. The city is the capital of the province of Lungar, about 420 kilometers from the capital, Lima, and is known for its rich cultural heritage and natural beauty.
Lungar has a long colonial history and pre-Columbian remains, and traces of ancient civilizations have been found in the surrounding area. The city center retains Spanish colonial architecture, such as the Church of San Juan Bautista, reflecting the fusion of Peru's diverse cultures. The local population is predominantly Quechua and Spanish speaking, and traditional festivals and handicrafts demonstrate the unique folklore of the Andes.
The economy is based on agriculture, animal husbandry and mining, with crops such as potatoes and corn in abundance, and mineral resources such as copper and zinc in the surrounding mountains. Located in a highland valley, Lungar has a mild, dry climate with distinct dry and rainy seasons, and is surrounded by magnificent Andean mountain scenery and hiking trails that attract eco-tourists to explore the region.
Visitors can reach Rongal by car from Lima overland, enjoying the highland scenery along the way. The city serves as a gateway for exploring the Ancash region and is close to Huascaran National Park (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), making it suitable for hiking and cultural heritage tours. Infrastructure is more basic, but offers local B&Bs and traditional gastronomic experiences.
