Aguas Calientes is an important tourist town in Peru, located at the foot of Machu Picchu in the Cusco region, at an altitude of about 2,040 meters. The town is the main gateway to the World Heritage site of Machu Picchu and is often referred to as "Machu Picchu Town".
Aguas Calientes is situated on the banks of the Urubamba River, surrounded by cloud forest, and can only be reached by rail or by hiking the Inca Trail. The tourist train from Cusco stops here and visitors can transfer to a bus that takes them directly to the entrance of Machu Picchu.
The town is famous for its hot springs (its Spanish name means "hot water") and rich biodiversity. The town has hotels, restaurants and a handicrafts market, providing accommodation and supplies for visitors. Despite its small size, its unique Andean landscape and cultural heritage make it one of the central nodes of the Peruvian tourist chain.
As an important stopover for the Inca civilization, Aguas Calientes blends colonial history with indigenous traditions, and is a meeting point for exploring Peru's ancient civilizations with modern tourism services.
