Covering an area of about 211.7 square kilometers and with a population of about 80,000, this city is known for its warm tropical climate and rich marine resources. Maasin has a long history, having originally developed as a mission center during the Spanish colonial period, and was officially founded as a city in 1771.
Located in a hilly coastal area with several natural harbors, fishing and coconut cultivation are the mainstays of the local economy. In recent years, tourism has been on the rise, with visitors experiencing activities such as scuba diving, island hopping, and exploring the nearby island of Limasawa, the birthplace of Philippine Christian history. The city has good infrastructure, with highways connecting the main towns in Leyte and an airport offering domestic flights.
Maasin is characterized by a strong Catholic culture and attracts a large number of tourists to the city's Festival of Cities celebration in May each year. Cebuano is spoken by the local population, with English and Filipino also widely spoken. Educational resources are well-developed, with several university branches, such as Southern Leyte State University. The city has a peaceful and simple atmosphere for travelers seeking nature and cultural experiences.
