Cidade Velha (Old Cape Verde)
Cidade Velha, located on the southwestern coast of Santiago Island, is the oldest European colonial town in the country and an important hub for trade between Africa and the Americas during the Age of Sail. Founded by the Portuguese in the late 15th century and originally known as Lisbonia, it was once the center of the slave trade and a witness to the brutal history of the transatlantic slave trade.
