Ribeira da Cruz: the cradle of Cape Verde's history and culture
Located in the north of the Cape Verdean island of Santiago, Ribeira da Cruz is the first capital and oldest surviving settlement of Cape Verde, founded by Portuguese colonizers in 1462. Famous for its distinctive colonial architecture, cobblestone streets and the ruins of a 16th century cathedral, this historic city was inscribed on the World Heritage List in Danger in 1985.
