Kandavu Island is the fourth largest island in Fiji, located about 80 kilometers south of Viti Levu in the South Pacific Ocean, with an area of about 411 square kilometers. The island is covered with dense tropical rainforest and has one of the most pristine natural landscapes in Fiji and is known as a "Bird Paradise", inhabited by many endemic birds.
The island is known for the famous Astrolabe Reef, the world's premier diving destination, rich in marine life and coral communities. The highest peak on the island is Mount Nabanikelau, which rises 805 meters above sea level. Kandavu Island is also home to several rivers and waterfalls, including the famous Banya Falls.
The islanders live mainly in coastal villages and maintain a traditional Fijian lifestyle. Tourism is the main source of the economy, offering activities such as eco-tourism, bird watching, trekking and diving. Visitors can experience the unique Fijian culture, sample local cuisine and enjoy the unspoiled natural environment.
Kandavu Island can be reached from the main island of Fiji by small plane or ferry. The best time to visit is during the dry season from May to October, when the climate is cool and dry and ideal for outdoor activities. The island's facilities are relatively simple and offer a unique option for travelers seeking a pristine natural experience.
