Nouméa International Airport (IATA code: NOU, ICAO code: NWWW) is the main international gateway to the French Overseas Territory of New Caledonia and is located on the La Tonta Peninsula, approximately 52 kilometers northwest of the capital city of Nouméa. As an important aviation hub in the South Pacific region, the airport connects to neighboring countries such as Australia, New Zealand, Japan and French Polynesia.
The airport has a 3,250-meter long runway, which is capable of handling wide-body passenger aircraft. The terminal, which blends modern design with elements of indigenous Kanak culture, offers duty-free stores, catering services and car rental. The new terminal opened in 2012 and has an annual capacity of approximately 500,000 passengers. Major airlines include Air Caledonia International, Air France and Qantas.
Situated on the edge of a UNESCO World Heritage-listed lagoon, the airport offers travelers direct access to Grande Terre, the main island of New Caledonia, known as the "Jewel of the Pacific", and its unique location makes it an ideal starting point for exploring the world's largest lagoon, heart-shaped mangrove forests and tropical coral reefs.
