Suriname is located in the northeastern part of South America and is the smallest and least populated independent country in South America, with its capital being Paramaribo. Bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the north, Brazil to the south, French Guiana to the east and Guyana to the west, the country is known for its multiculturalism and tropical rainforest resources.
Paramaribo is the political, economic and cultural center of Suriname, and its historic downtown area is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The city's architecture is a blend of Dutch colonial style and tropical features, with a unique landscape of wooden buildings and palm-lined streets. The main language is Dutch, but English, Hindi and local Creole are also widely spoken.
More than 80% of Suriname is covered by virgin tropical rainforest and is rich in biodiversity and mineral resources. The country is crisscrossed by rivers, and the main river, the Suriname River, is an important transportation waterway. The economy is based on bauxite mining, agriculture and fishing, with ecotourism emerging in recent years.
Suriname's population consists of diverse ethnic groups such as Indians, Africans, Indians, Javanese and Chinese, creating a unique blend of cultures. Traditional festivals such as Diwali in India, Eid al-Fitr in Indonesia and Chinese New Year are widely celebrated, giving Suriname the reputation of a "Little United Nations".
