Nieuw Nickerie, the second largest town in Suriname, is located in the Nickerie District in the northwest of the country, next to the mouth of the Corantine River and across the river from Springland, Guyana. As an important agricultural and trade center in Suriname, New Nickerie is known for its rice farming industry, and the vast rice fields constitute its unique economic landscape.
Shinnikeri is located in a tropical rainforest climate zone with an average annual temperature of about 27°C and abundant rainfall. The town is low lying and has fertile alluvial plains, but relies on dykes for flood control. Its geographical location near the Atlantic Ocean provides a rich ecosystem at the confluence of the river and the sea, with mangrove forests and wetland nature reserves in the vicinity.
The economy is dominated by agriculture, with rice exports as the mainstay, as well as fishing and a small amount of tourism. The town's architecture is a blend of Dutch colonial style and Caribbean elements, and the population is diverse, including Indians and Creoles, creating a unique cultural atmosphere. The Riverside Market on Saturdays is an important social and commercial event in the area.
New Nickerie is connected by highway to the capital city of Paramaribo and has a small airport and river port. Major attractions include the Corentyne River Birding Area, traditional rice farm tours, and eco-tourism routes to the neighboring Brownsberg Nature Reserve, which attracts nature lovers.
