Puerto Somoza, located on the Pacific coast of western Nicaragua, is an important port city in the department of Rivas. The port is adjacent to the mouth of the famous San Juan River, about 110 kilometers from the capital Managua, with fishing, shipping and tourism as the mainstays of the economy.
The port of Somoza has a natural deep-water harbor and is surrounded by mangrove ecosystems and black sand beaches. The climate is tropical with a wet and dry season, with an average annual temperature of 28°C. The tourist season is from December to April. The Momotombo Volcano is a natural landmark near the harbor, creating a unique landscape of mountains and sea.
As one of the main commercial ports on the Pacific coast of Nicaragua, the Port of Somoza exports agricultural products such as coffee and bananas, and is an important distribution center for fishing. The port is connected to the main cities of the country by the Pan-American Highway, and there are regular ferries to tourist destinations such as Ometepe Island.
The port of Somoza is known as a surfing destination, with consistent year-round waves that attract many international surfers. The area retains its colonial architecture and the seafood market in the marina area offers freshly caught grouper and lobster. The annual Festival of the Sea, held during Easter, is an important traditional cultural event in Nicaragua.
