Moyogalpa's economy is based on agriculture, and it is an important producer of coffee, tobacco, corn, and beans in Nicaragua. It is known for the high quality of its caffeine, which is exported to Europe and the United States. Traditional handicrafts, such as palm leaf weaving and pottery, are also a specialty. In recent years, ecotourism has been developed to attract tourists to explore the surrounding cloud forests and waterfalls.
The city retains its colonial architecture, with the 19th-century St. John's Church around the central square. The population is mostly Mestizo (mestizo) and speaks Spanish. The surrounding mountains are characterized by waterfalls and nature reserves, such as the Salomon Falls and the Piedras Blancas Nature Reserve, which are ideal for hiking and birdwatching.
